Under normal load this shouldn't happen. It could only have to do with 
interrupts from PS/2 port.
However, this shows the actual problem with using Synaptics' absolute mode. I 
vote against having this as the default setting.
In the absolute mode, the CPU must process the absolute movements of the 
finger in order to translate them to mouse movements. That means that, under 
some system load, the mouse will not respond smoothly any more. I wouldn't 
like to have increased priority or so just for the mouse.
In the relative mode, the touchpad processor calculates the movements and 
queues them as mouse events to the PS/2. This buffering provides smooth 
movement even under heavy CPU usage. The downside is that in relative mode, 
the touchpad has no adjustments (only default ones) and no extra features 
(Z-axis, scroll zones). It may even not have the middle button (which I'm 
missing most)
Perhaps we should ask Synaptics for a better relative mode. AFAIK the PIC 
processor inside the touchpad is not upgradeable, but future models could 
offer better code..

Try running the touchpad in relative mode, with 'options psmouse proto=exps' 
at /etc/modprobe.conf, which disables the Synaptics (i.e. absolute mode).

Unfortunately, it happens all the time, even if the CPU load == 0.00. I don't 
have any other PS/2 devices (since I don't have a PS/2 port ;p) but I do use 
a USB mouse - but this is totally unrelated to this problem.

Well... This causes X to bomb out with not finding any Synaptics device - 
which If i understand the driver correctly is quite correct at this point.

The fact is, it worked _perfectly_ under 2.6.5 with the standard mode. No 
problems whatsoever. Something must have changed (but I'm too unfamiliar with 
kernel code) that causes some sort of a delay in the processing of the input 
queue of the touchpad. 

I've upgraded the X driver, but that changes nothing.

same problem here with 2.6.6 (recent gentoo system). I am running 
2.6.6-rc3 and 2.6.5 without the problems.

fwiw, I have the same observation moving from 2.6.5-mm4 -> 2.6.6 on a
gentoo machine... On the observations side, i can add that it not
only fails to smoothly follow the track it should, but it seems it's
back to its old bad behavior of randomly jumping to the top-right
corner of the screen... :-(

Oh, and this is on a Dell L400 with synaptics touchpad, but using the
external ps/2 port to a "normal" mouse... No USB involved...

I just wanted to add that I also have a synaptics mouse, running 2.6.6 and 
yesterday i was compiling 2 copies of xfree86, glibc and gcc at the same 
time getting loads into the 5.x range per uptime and havent experienced 
any problems; well other than my occasional problem of putting an extra 
finger on the mouse pad and then wondering whats wrong.

I can confirm the problem not only in gaim but also on the console and 
other applications with 2.6.6 .

I've looked in the archives, and the problem looks very much like the one in 
this thread:

And I've been noticing some keyboard glitches too, but these were to 
unfrequent, and usually occur only in one application (gaim) so I figured it 
might be a bug in gaim... guess not...

Unfortunately, the hints in this thread don't help. I've browsed the input 
system FAQ, but no dice.

The only thing that gives me a working synaptics touchpad is acpi=off.

It worked fine with 2.6.5.

Perhaps we need to check with ACPI guys as it seems that you are affected by
this code and there were some changes to ACPI subsystem between 2.6.5 and 2.6.6.

It is supposed to be unaffected by frequency changes which is a good thing. I am
running with it, but I think I've seen couple of reports that it caused time go
twice as fast.

Neither has any effect. 

I've also disabled CONFIG_X86_SPEEDSTEP_CENTRINO_ACPI, figuring there might be 
some problem with that, but that doesn't change a thing. 

Also, I'm wondering if there's any point in using the CONFIG_X86_PM_TIMER 
timesource?

It comes from speedstep-centrino module, could you please try booting with ACPI
but without speedstep-centrino loaded? Also, does it help if you do not compile/
load ACPI battery module?

Booting with acpi=off fixes the problem, although I'm curious to what the
problem actually is.

I've attached the dmesgs from 2.6.6, 2.6.5, and 2.6.6 with acpi=off.

There is a line that says "Invalid control registers" that I wonder where it
comes from, but you might see something more here than I do.

Hmm.. there was no changes to PS/2 processing between 2.6.5 and 2.6.6 except
for some Logitech tweaking, but it should not affect Synaptics handling in
any way...

Could you check if you still have DMA enabled on your disks, check your time
source (TSC, ACPI PM timer, etc) and probably boot with acpi off?

Hello List,

Since installing 2.6.6 on my trusty laptop, I can't use the built-in synaptics
touchpad anymore. The tracking is totally broken:

When you touch-drag on the touchpad, the mouse cursor will jump to where you
stopped your action approx. 1/1.5 seconds _after_ your move. This makes using
the touchpad virtually impossible.

This problem is not present under 2.6.5, which I'm running right now.
Same .config.

Nothing seems to show up in the logs that could reflect any problem.

Any pointers?
