Ugh, how did I let that one through?

Guys, how often mut it be said? PLEASE always test all code with all
kernel deubg options enabled.

maybe we should make a CONFIG_KERNEL_DEVELOPER option that SELECTs the
various options that really should be on.

If there is a chance of reasonable agreement on what those options are I'll cook
up a patch... (but I don't want to get bogged down in a 500 mail flamewar about
CONFIG_FOO_BAR being right for this or not...)

There are a few in Documentation/SubmitChecklist items 12 and 15.

You can be rather sure that there will be at least... questions and
concerns... ;-)

Anyway, the root problem is that developers and integrators don't take
time to follow the rules in SubmitChecklist. (I know that I still have
ways to go to improve my own processes in that regard.) A Kconfig
switch may raise awareness of SubmitChecklist a little bit, but I'm
afraid it is not awareness what's the issue here.

Don't blame yourself, blame me.

Yep, 100% my error. Am testing a fix now, will post soon.

I would support such a CONFIG_ option. But in this case, it was plain
oversight / poor engineering on my part. So, while it may have helped,
doesn't make up for deficiencies on my end.

While I'm not removing the brown paper bag from my head, I was unable to
reproduce the BUG on my 2-way x86_64 at home. I then noticed Miles'
system is x86_32. After wrangling with our testing grid, I got a 32-bit
system booting 2.6.24-git22. Didn't reproduce there either, with
CONFIG_DEBUG_SPINLOCK_SLEEP=y. What am I doing wrong? I think the
following is the right fix, but have not see the original BUG to know
for sure. I did the `find /proc | xargs tail`, but shouldn't I hit the
BUG just simply `cat`'ing or `echo`ing into the file?

Miles, could you test the following?

Thanks,
Nish

hugetlb: fix overcommit locking

proc_doulongvec_minmax() calls copy_to_user()/copy_from_user(), so we
can't hold hugetlb_lock over the call. Use a dummy variable to store the
sysctl result, like in hugetlb_sysctl_handler(), then grab the lock to
update nr_overcommit_huge_pages.

I don't believe it is related to this patch, but while testing, I
tried running "find /proc | xargs cat" and "find /proc | xargs head"
and "find /proc | xargs tail" and "ls -aR /" all at once. Everything
seemed to be running great. Firefox continued to be highly
responsive. I did notice that one of the command line processes had
stopped scrolling text. After sending my approval message just now, I
killed all the command line processes. Then I noticed that the
frequency scaling monitor remained pegged for both CPUs in my Duo 2
Core processor. I ran top, and everything looked okay. As far as I
can tell, top thinks the CPU is mostly idling. However, as I write
this my fan is going full speed. I looked in my dmesg output and see
no sign of an OOPS, a BUG or and INFO message.

I just ran:

Now everything is quite and running normally, except that Gnome seems
to no longer be increasing the frequency of the CPUs with the ondemand
governor.

Does this not happen with the patch reverted? I'd be really surprised if
this had any effect on your fans... You could always just revert the
patch you bisected down to from 2.6.24-git20 (it just closes a race in
hugetlbfs code, which you're not going to hit with the commands below),
to see if it is a pre-existing condition in 2.6.25-rc0.
