Well, I'm getting all those errors on SATA disks again. I have just returned
one thinkin it was faulty. But I don't buy I got all the bad drives in the

The WDC is the new brand disk I received in change for the 'faulty' Seagate.
The ST3500820AS is also new.

This happened burning a data DVD:

So the 2 SATA drives begin to spit errors when writing the DVD. This must
be a kernel bug...One other disk that was flaky in this box has survived
a full erase with SeaTools, a long test, and a Vista install on it.
Kernel is 2.6.24.4.

Any ideas ?

TIA

Can you bisect to see when this problem starts? I'm pretty sure it's
software, either interrupt-related or the libata driver itself.

See http://ata.wiki.kernel.org/index.php/Libata_error_messages for a
full explanation of that error message.

Most notable: "DRDY" == device ready == device says everything is OK,
from it's perspective. "timeout" usually means an interrupt wasn't
delivered from your ATA controller, when we were expecting one.

It could be, that it is a driver problem, but just to be sure:

I would recommend to run the vendors diag program again, and also look at
the s.m.a.r.t output. (Typically you need an error code to return the drive,
did you had one for your last return?)

Besides the disk it could also be a voltage problem (voltage control on
mainboard or power supply). I asume you ruled out thermal problems...

I would completely second that. In multiple instances, I've had
different disks behave very strangely when the power supply became
flaky (12V at 11.3V and/or 5V hovering around 4.5V).  And there seems
to be lots of flaky power supplies around these days.

Phil.

I'm trying to get a good starting point for bisection, but at 2.6.22
it still begins to give errors at a few seconds of start copying:

I will have to go backwards more and more...

I'm still trying to dig this...

After googling sometime I saw several reports like mine (it looks like a too
common problem). In those repots, kernel messages were a bit different from
mine. For example, from http://marc.info/?l=linux-kernel&m=119498755206823&w=2:

ata1.00: status: { DRDY }
ata1: soft resetting link
ata1: SATA link up 1.5 Gbps (SStatus 113 SControl 300)
ata1.00: configured for UDMA/133
ata1: EH complete

Why I don't have any "SATA link up..." message ?

And at device init, some logs read like:

ata1.00: ATA-8: WDC WD2500BEVS-22UST0, 01.01A01, max UDMA/133
ata1.00: 488397168 sectors, multi 16: LBA48 NCQ (depth 31/32)
ata1.00: configured for UDMA/133

Mine is like:

ata3.00: ATA-8: WDC WD3200AVJS-63WDA0, 12.01B02, max UDMA/133
ata3.00: 625142448 sectors, multi 16: LBA48 NCQ (depth 0/32)  <===== 0, not 31 ??
ata3.00: configured for UDMA/133
ata4.00: ATA-8: ST3500820AS, SD25, max UDMA/133
ata4.00: 976773168 sectors, multi 16: LBA48 NCQ (depth 0/32)  <===== 0, not 31 ??
ata4.00: configured for UDMA/133

Just to see if I have some strange behaviour...
